If you follow me on Twitter and Facebook, for the past few months you’ve probably seen me talking about Book #10, revisiting an old friend, and the book I’ve been referring to as Ida. For those who just want to know what the heck Ida is, I’ll put you out of your misery first before explaining why I needed to write this one. Ida is how I’ve been mentally pronouncing If I Don’t Ask, which I accept was perhaps a little bit disingenuous—though technically it’s still said Ida if you go by the acronym IIDA. Semantics are fun.
If I Don’t Ask is basically Ask, Tell but from Rebecca’s point of view. There it is. Those who only came for the main event, feel free to skip off and don’t forget to get your parking validated! But if you’re curious about why…
I’ve been wanting to write this book ever since I wrote Ask, Tell, but other projects got in the way and demanded my attention, so this one got pushed further and further down the line. Ask, Tell was my debut novel and while I’m super proud of it, it came with debut woes—especially given how it was presented as a first person, one PoV story set within a specific period of time in Sabine Fleischer’s life. I always wished that I could have given more of the befores, the why are they attracted to each other, how did this come about, what the heck does Rebecca Keane think about all this stuff and what does she think about Sabine—other than the obvious heart eyes that is.
I mean, yeah we got Ask Me Again as a natural progression from Ask, Tell, which gave me the opportunity to weave a little of Bec’s thoughts about Sabine and how she sees her, as well as a brief glimpse of her feelings about The Incident. But I still wanted more. So now I’m doing more.
But why am I doing this now?
Simple. I needed a creative palate cleanser, exactly in the way that I wrote If the Shoe Fits (a lighter, low-drama novel) directly after Ask Me Again and Alone (two VERY emotionally draining novels). This year has been mentally and creatively exhausting. We sold a bunch of horses and moved (after a long delay) from Australia to New Zealand because my better half is a clever legend who got a job in NZ. I wrote Go Around during that time and definitely had a dose of creative squishies. Oh yeah, and the pandemic. I NEEDED to spend time with an old friend or two (or three if you count Mitch). A friend I knew intimately, a friend who would tell me how they felt right away with no mental gymnastics or begging, a friend who’s story I already know in my heart.
I am so effing excited to get the chance to show more of who Rebecca is, how she sees things, and her motivations for doing what she did in Ask, Tell. As the work-in-progress stands now, we’ll get a little of the pre-Ask, Tell stuff then move into Bec’s PoV of Ask, Tell with some new scenes, obviously, as well as some important ones from her PoV. But if you know anything about me, you’d know I don’t plan and that plan might change.
If I Don’t Ask is scheduled for release May, 2022 with Bella Books.
You are such a talented author and always, without any doubt, never disappoint! Your writing, imagination, story telling is phenomenal!
Looking forward to IDA or IIDA as really loved Sabine and Rebecca’s story. Looking forward to it.
Hope your move went well for you and your family.
You know when you get good news and want to jump from you at ambarasing hour at night but can’t bc people sleeping???? That’s me right now I’m so excited for this!!!!
So incredibly Proud of you .full Stop !!
Holy cow! I can hardly wait! I absolutely love this storyline and am so happy to see it still have some life in your imagination!
I may have screamed when I read that we are getting more of Rebecca’s PoV! She is my favorite character in the Ask, Tell series. Reading the first book, I would find myself wishing for her viewpoint of things. I was glad to get some of that in Ask Me Again and I enjoyed If the Shoe Fits. I believed we had heard the last of those beloved characters which made me sad, but I consoled myself with knowing everyone got their happily ever after. My birthday is in May so this new book will be my birthday present to myself. I can’t wait! Thank you so much for giving us more of these wonderful characters!
Just reread all the Bec sections last nite. Look forward to reading #10!!!
OMG! Please, EJ, make Abby Craden narrate this one…
Oh this will be fantastic 😀❤️
This is awesome!!!… I absoutely loved both Ask, Tell and Ask Me Again. I totally related to Sabine’s and Rebecca’s story. I can’t wait to read more of Rebecca’s PoV.
Now this has got me very excited. Bec was a great character & I feel she has more to offer. From her POV will mean a whole new tilt on the story….that excites me. This book will round off the previous 3.
Great news look forward to reading this.
Your books are gorgeous, well written and keep you on the edge of your seat. So happy to be getting another from you. Love you so much, enjoy the new place🏠
Please please PLEASE don’t let anyone other than Abby Craden narrate it. Her voice for Bek is what made these books for me, and what made me go Ooh, not sure, when I listened to ” If the shoe fits ” as they were still big supporting characters. By far Ask tell, Ask me again, and If the shoe fits are my all time number 1,2, and 3 out of hundreds of audio books I have!
I am not a big fan of the American army or books written about then, even sapphic books with characters in that genre. So when I first stumbled upon your body of work I avoided the Ask Tell series. The closest I got was reading If The Shoe Fits which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Last year (2022) something you may have written piqued my curiosity, and I decided to give your Ask Tell series a try.
When I made the decision I had to go all out and get all three books to complete my set and read them in the order that your recommended.
Thank you for writing your IDA and for bringing the story full circle.
Yours is some of the best work I have read!!!
Thank you for sharing with us.
Regards,
A. J.
